Not an Etsy Space, but...

Nichole Heady from Papertrey Ink. Okay, she doesn't have an Etsy store, so, it's not officially an Etsy Space. But, is this not the best....studio....ever. I love this place. I want everything in it. Check it out here: http://nicholeheady.typepad.com/capture_the_moment/2007/07/the-new-studio.html

24 September 2008

Yes, it's Wednesday. And, yes, I don't have a new Etsy Space for the second week. I have several people who pledged pics for upcoming spaces and then I don't hear back. Most of them are really busy and I totally get that and don't blame them in the least for not having time this week or next, etc. I don't want to nag them, either, so, I'm still waiting.

In the meantime, I will post links to other blogs with studio spaces up that I happen upon. Check this out on the infamous Modish site - Handmade Spaces. Fabulous work spaces, I must say.

Featured Space #12 - Little Daisy Chains

Beck from Little Daisy Chains says:

My space used to be in the corner of our living room it was a desk, a chair and lots of boxes of supplies under, on top and all around!! It got to the point where it was difficult for me to fill my orders. I couldn't find anything. Not only that but when guests would come over I would be embarrassed because of the mess. It was time to get organized.

My husband and I brain stormed and decided it would work for all if we moved my little crafty corner to the dining room. Still looked funky http://www.flickr.com/photos/69561650@N00/2170869290/ and still not so organized. After more talking and quite a few trips to IKEA, Storables and Target my space is now a workable studio and I love every minute of it!

I use the bookshelf from IKEA to keep a majority of my supplies and shipping materials. I use my desk to create, imagine and hold my tools. I have an awesome crafty shelf for ribbons and such and the storage area I use for even more supplies and display type goodies. I'm pretty sure I could open up a craft store. ;O)

Featured Space #11 - Apple Blossom Designs

April from Apple Blossom Designs says:

My space began as a table crammed into a bay window in my master bedroom. Then one afternoon, I was looking at my girls' unused playroom and the light bulb went off. Why should I be crammed and have limited work and storage space when there is a perfectly good space that isn't really being used for anything but toy storage. So we went through all the toys and moved what was left into bedrooms and I started moving my stuff in! WOW! What a difference! It's so nice to be able to move! And if I want to work late at night my husband doesn't have to sleep on the couch! I kept the small table and chairs in the space so the girls' could "play beads with mommy".

Featured space #10 - She Sews By The Seashore

Naomi from She Sews By The Seashore says.

I am a seamstress and have been for the past two years. Those two years have gone by so quickly, but it feels like I've been doing this forever. It feels so natural to sit down and sew. I spend my time in my studio dreaming up new things to make; sorting my fabric and patterns; looking around Etsy for things I want to buy; talking to fellow artists; and of course sewing. Sometimes I'll just sit with a few scraps of fabric and just start cutting and see what I come up with. Sometimes it is a terrible disaster; other times the outcome is better then I expected. My studio is for me, a place of quiet and relaxation. I don't see my sewing as work; instead, I find it great fun to do. The money is just an added bonus. I find that I am much more handy with a sewing machine, or just needle and thread then I am with a brush, pencil or even words.

Featured space #9 - panyi zsuzsi

Zsuzsi says...

Panyizsuzsi is a family business creating modern glass jewelries for trendy woman. The glass items are designed by Zsuzsi Panyi a Hungarian architect. We asked her about their studio space.

Our studio is located in our house and it is under constant reorganizing. The former study/office space opens from the living room. The metamorphose of the space takes time as our business develops. First we started to use the desk in the room for cutting glass and we temporary had our grinder there. We also store our smaller glass sheets there in an old disk holder that perfectly suits our needs. The smaller pieces are in a long wooden box, arranged by their tones and the really tiny ones are in a little cigar box. The glass cutter is stored in an orange, vintage little vase. The memory board is under construction, but the wall above the desk is decorated! There are some pictures, a retro vintage lamp front of it and a lovely clock from the eighties!

We have a wall to wall and almost floor to ceiling plain white bookshelf for the paperwork, books and ready to sell items. The back of the room is decorated with a child size mannequin that we use for our craft fairs. Marcel Breuer’s – nb. He was Hungarian - chair is just one of my uncountable on-line auction findings. The gorgeous vase was recently moved because of the little lady right next to it!

Now, that our kiln just arrived we do plan to separate glass and office work from each other. We will have a kind of glass bench, for cutting, grinding and the kiln to leave the desk for the tidy work!We will be happy to tell about it when it is ready.

Featured Space #8 - Scribble Nation

Mary Helen from Scribble Nation

1. Storage bins for all my fabric. It seems only yesterday the contents were neatly organized by color and material. Good times...
2. The aforementioned "poop chair". I painted this sucker many years back. It horrified my father, but I thought the little floater added necessary detail to the piece.
3. My sewing machine safely tucked inside its case (but wearing a random crap hat.)
4. Yes, that is a coconut.
5. Go bulletin board! When I put this up I imagined a collage of neatly arranged swatches, sketches, and clippings. What actually wound up here? Not quite Martha material.
6. My favorite Minks to Sinks find ever, a freaky old cabinet made with cigar box drawers. It hold all of my little doo dads with suck style!
7. This is not coffee. It actually holds all of the little stray strings from when I sew. They are kept safely inside this cup.
8. A giant bag of herb. No! Not THAT kind of herb. Come on, this is a family show.
9. Fabric scrap bags. I may be messy, but that doesn't mean I'm not O.C.D. I have all of my fabric pieces under 1/2 yard in color schemed ziplocks. This particular one is a mish-mash that I put together for a project. The rest are freakishly color coordinated.

1. A plate full of kiwi. Believe it or not, this and the coconut are actually work related.
2. Various Boot-onnière's waiting for pinbacks. Coming soon to a Scribble Nation near you!!
3.Packing tape! Amidst all the chaos I still get my orders out. (And my endless amount of SwapTree swap books.)
4. !@#$ allergies.
5. Upcycled Envelopes waiting to be sorted into "collections" and photographed.
6. Google Chat - the underminer of all productivity.
7. A golden chicken (and his friend the rubber cow). I don't really know the deal with the golden chicken. According to my Pops it's VERY important though, so I keep it right here on my desk.
8. Kewpie!!
9. Martha's free calender keeping me up to date! (It's even on the right month. I'm SO grown up.)
10. You could call this a cordless phone OR you could more accurately call it the charities begging for money device. I know this sounds awful, but anyone who belongs to activist groups or has donated money from time to time will know what I mean when I tell you that I get called EVERY DAY by multiple charities. I couldn't possibly have enough to donate to all of them so I wish they would just LEAVE ME ALONE ALREADY!
11. My lucky Etsy magic candle. I wrote ETSY all over this pillar and I light it every time I list something new. Mojo anyone?

Featured Space #7 - Serendipity Crafts

Hugh & Elizabeth Henry from Serendipity Crafts. They say...

Hugh and I work out of our home like most do but we don't have one area which is dedicated to our crafting. Our guest bedroom (ha!) is more of a store room of unpainted plates/platters, shipping boxes, packing peanuts, tape, labels etc. We haven't eaten at our dining table in months because it is our holding space and shipping table. Our living room is production central - yes it includes a couch and a chair but no, we don't actually sit on them. Instead, we can normally be found right in front of our computers.

Hugh comes up with new plate and platter designs on his computer (on the right) and I answer emails and promote our biz on my computer (on the left). If I swivel my chair to the left, I can multi task - i.e. paint the plates and platters!

Welcome to our little corner of this crazy crafting world :)

Featured space #6 - Soap Scent-sations

Please welcome Kristi from Soap Scent-sations. Kristi says...

Hi, my name is Kristi and I make hand-poured soaps and bath products. My Etsy shop is SoapScentsations.etsy.com. My kitchen/breakfast nook is my workspace. In here my creations come to life. I make bathnet soaps, bath bombs, and solid lotion bars. I also make shower favor soaps and create custom gift baskets from time-to-time.

The first image is a facing view of where I do most of my work. This cabinet holds nearly all of my soap making supplies and tools. It is overflowing and I have two giant rubber tubs of things in my bedroom closet! When I am really busy I overflow onto the table in front and the kitchen cabinet which is to the left.

The next images are of the cubbies within the cabinet. My favorite feature about the cabinet is the cork board I added to it to hold orders, newspaper clippings, brochures, and recipes. I just pin the things I need up there for when I am working. Keeps it out of my way and out of the soap mess. I thought this cabinet was big when I bought it, but it was quickly filled.

In the right cubbie are my fragrance oils, soap additives, colorants, and wax. In the center are my books, some decoration, and little soaps I like to have on display. Some of my antique collections have been shoved in here as well. In the left cubbie are the essential oils, measuring equipment, oils, powders, and other soap additives. When I work these doors are always open and things falling out because I am constantly rearranging to find exactly what I need.

The bottom cubbies hold molds, soap bases, office supplies, packaging, and whatever else I can get in there that is related to my business. Storage overflows beside the cabinet on an antique metal chair. I use the steps as shelves to put my soap storage boxes on. And to the left under the bar into the kitchen I have more storage for completed soaps. The baskets are perfect, but I need twice as many (again other storage goes in boxes in my bedroom closet).

Usually my kiddos are playing in the living room where I can see them or working on their own projects at the table behind me. I like that they can be with me and I can halt my process to help them with theirs. And sometimes they like to help me by melting the shrink wrap on the soaps (and my six-year old says he helps with putting away the dishes!!--if you want his two-cents!! ha).

Featured space #5 - WhiteStone Stitchery

This week's featured space belongs to Jaymie of WhiteStone Stitchery. Jaymie says...

At WhiteStone Stitchery I believe in going back to the basics regarding quilting. My grandmother didn't have the opportunity to go to Joann Fabrics or order fabric online when she quilted. She used what she had and made lovely quilts with color and texture and love.

I specialize in handmade quilted bags made with mostly vintage, thrifted, recycled and hand me down fabrics. Occasionally I will use a new fabric, but very rarely. I sort of have a reputation with the ladies I work with and they will bring me their cast off clothing before taking it to the Good will, so I can go through it for fabric!

As I begin a purse I use nature as my inspiration. I think about what colors combinations I love to see in gardens and natural landscaping. Then each fabric is coordinated with the each other and just for fun i will combine unexpected colors and textures.

My sewing studio was designed and built by my husband. He lovingly donated 1/2 his man garage for my craft area. He built walls, and laid flooring and made these great closets so that I can store STUFF. How awesome is that?

Sometimes when I don't have time to sew, I will just sit in my chair and spin around!

Featured Space #4 - Autumn Sky Adornments

Say "Hi" to Crystal from Autumn Sky Adornments. Crystal says...

What I do there? LOL...what DON'T I do there.... I have a worktable, and that is usually where I am, beadweaving, sketching, sorting my stash...again, gluing bits of things to bits of other things. When my hands are busy, that's where I am. Actual sewing takes place there also, but any cutting I do in the kitchen. Sometimes, I just sit there. In my space, waiting for inspiration to strike.

The sofa is usually in use by the cats...they like to keep me company while I work. (Either that, or they're supervising..hmmmm)I take the sketchbook over there sometimes, and I curl up to shred magazine pages and work on my journal/collage/vision book. It's a good spot for reading too, and having difficult conversations.

Featured space #2 - Cookies Creations

Welcome to featured space #2 - Rosemarie from Cookies Creations. Here's what Rosemarie had to say about her space. :)

I have fun creating in my tiny little work space. I learned how to create with polymer clay about 4 years ago. I learned on my own. I bought books, books and more books and watched craft shows. I started out making figurines. Then I made whatever I found interesting and was fun and colorful.I started out with a small folding table and gradually build my little creative work space in the corner of my room. It's by the window so it seems bigger and is cheery. I which I could have a room just for crafting, but this will do for now. It sure could get messy in such a short time. The two closets in my room are not used for my clothes, they are used to store my supplies. I have so many supplies I have to take a tour once in awhile to see what I have. I guess we are all like that, buying to make sure we have it, if and when we need it.I create items because it's fun and that makes it all worthwhile. And if someone likes it that makes it even better.

03 June 2008

Welcome to "Real Space Wednesday"

I love looking at artist's work spaces. My favorite thing is storage. I love little drawers and cubbies and other things artists use to store their materials. I also like to see their actual workspace. As in, a paint splattered table or easel or a pile of beads or yarn. So, I have made this blog to dedicate it to Etsy artist's work spaces and shops. Each week (or more as time goes), I will be featuring an Etsy artist's workspace and shop. To start off, a little shameless self promotion.

My name is Renee. My shop is called renee's Paper & Yarn. I started off doing cards and some knitting items. I also added some jewelry and right now, I'm focusing on beaded items, although, I will be adding some paper items very soon. I tend to cycle my work as I have many interests and don't like to get bored.

I work at my desk, which also holds my computer. As you can see, I like things cluttered. I do all of my knitting and bead work, here. If I'm painting, I will sit at the kitchen table, which is actually right behind me. The cubby shelves on the left hold yarn and DVDs. My scanner sits on top.

This is a section of wire cubby shelves I use to hold yarn for current projects. I also keep knitting needles, stitch holders, pliers, and other jewelry making tools hanging on the edges where they're handy.

This is a section of a wall of storage units of drawers and paper slots that line the wall across from my desk. I store all of my stamping and painting supplies here. I'm in the middle of reorganizing, so, it is in quite a disarray.

This is to the left of the previous picture. The whole thing is 5 units wide plus these shelves. I love these units. I wish I had room for more.

So, that is my space. I also have a closet I need to go through and downsize, but, doesn't everyone? lol.
